Wagner, Pasolini, Beethoven, Zarah Leander or Kleist – we tend to think that we know everything about life, death and the artistic work of these cultural icons. But what are the true stories behind their legends? Mysterious circumstances surround their death, rumours about secret affairs or political machinations persist, deception and crime enclosed them:
It is no secret that the famous German composer Richard Wagner was notoriously indebted throughout his life. Regarding all the scandals and rumours surrounding him and his second wife Cosima, the question arises if they were a regular gangster duo, the Bonnie & Clyde, so to speak, of cultural history?
The unresolved murder of Pasolini is investigated anew. After having been released from prison a few years ago, his sentenced murderer revealed mysterious connections to the Mafia and the Italian secret service.
Ludwig van Beethoven suffered from many things, among them syphilis, deafness, icterus, excessive consumption of alcohol and finally the severe lead poisoning that caused his death. His surprisingly comprehensive patient file may hold the key to a better picture of this complicated musical genius and his impressive artistic work.
The Swedish diva Zarah Leander became the biggest film star of the Nazi era. She befriended Goebbels and was worshipped by Hitler. But secret files of the Kremlin and the FBI suggest that Leander worked as a Russian spy. Who was the agent with the code name ‘Rosemarie’?
The death at Wannsee Lake – a spectacular case that has, to date, continued to disturb and fascinate the ensuing ages. The German poet Kleist was found shot – what is that supposed to mean? What exactly happened at Wannsee Lake that afternoon on November 21st, 1811? Who shot Kleist?
„Culture Files“ is a European cross-media project consisting of a documentary App, a 4×52‘ TV series and a series of graphic novels. Based on the aesthetics and storytelling of modern day crime drama television series it captivates the audience by exploring the unsolved mysteries revolving around many of Europe‘s greatest artists and thinkers.
The vivid pace and investigative story line of the TV series is designed to draw younger audiences into engaging with personalities whose work helped shape our cultural perceptions of today. With its unique combination of glossy crime-fiction aesthetics and the investigative rigour of high-end documentaries the series will develop a distinctive brand design.
A female investigator and 4-6 experts in each episode look at the lives of prominent artists and thinkers. The experts drive the investigations with concise interviews and thereby reveal unexpected facts about the culture icon. Found evidence, analyzed by the experts, will be collected in a studio space that serves as a kind of investigator’s lab – minimalist in style and equipped with the contemporary paraphernalia of scientific inquiry. Films and photographs are projected on video walls, personal letters, newspaper articles, medical documents, maps and police files are strewn across transparent backlit tables.
The visual language of the series is characterized by animation in a graphic novel-style. These animated drawings illustrate important biographical events. Furthermore a road trip along the most important places in the life of the portrayed icon and re-creations with well known actors add to the surprising overall picture of the culture icon.
