New Zealand from Above (Episode 5)
Kauri Trees and Archipelago
In coproduction with Making Movies (New Zealand), Bearcage (Australia) and ZDF/ARTE.
The north of the North Island is the realm of the Maori. In this area the foundation document of the country was signed by Maori and Europeans, giving peace to the former violent battle between them. And from the northern peak the deceased Maori begin their journey to the land of their ancestors. The Waipoua Forest which gaves home to the oldest and biggest Kauri-Tree of New Zealand is as magical as the cliffy eastcoast and its beautiful submarine life where even Orcas are home.

Kauri Trees and Archipelago
In coproduction with Making Movies (New Zealand), Bearcage (Australia) and ZDF/ARTE.
The northern part of the North Island is the most dense populated part of the country. On the narrow strip that forms the North Island the culture of the Maoir is more visible.
The biggest town of the country, Auckland, is situated at the narrowest part of the strip. The groundstrip between the Tasmansea in the west and the Pacific in the east is sometimes just one kilometer broad. Auckland was built over a volcanic field and even though there are no active volcanoes, the political precautions are evidence for the permanent danger from the depths of the earth.
Further in the north there is the impressive and fantastical Waipoua Forest. It consists almost entirely of the majestic Kauri tree, that soars 50 meters straight into the air and has a trunk with at least 4 meters of circumference. In the midst of the forest there is the the biggest and oldest Kauri. The „Lord of the Forest“ as the Maori call it is over 2000 years old, 50 meters tall and its trunk has a circumference of barely 14 meters.
The Poor Knights Islands that are situated close to the East Coast, enchant their visitors with their beautiful and magical submarine world! An underwater-photographer shows us the many underwater caves, that offer protection to the most divers species of fish.
Further north in the so called Bay of Islands region the first Europeans established their settlements. When they arrived a battle broke out between them and the Maori, that had lived their for many hundred years already. But in 1840 the treaty of Waitangi was signed by Maori and British: indeed the treatment established a british governor but it also recognised Maori ownership of their land and gave the Maori the rights of British subjects. But even the treaty is considered the founding document of New Zealand, it’s still a controversial document. Close to where the treaty was signed the only Maori radiostation – where they talk in their programs the second oficial language of the country – can be found.
At the northern tip of the North Island, the so called Kap Reinga, the Tasmansea and the Pacific Ocean meet. At their meeting point the surface of the ocean is rippled, waves crashing one against another. At this place – the Maori legends say – the souls of the deceasded Maori leave the country and start their last journey in direction to the country of their ancestors: Hawaiiki-A-Nui.
