Khalo Matabane asks global thinkers, Apartheid-victims and Mandela’s entourage to classify Nelson Mandela’s achievements, thereby providing a multi-facetted approach to his myth. His recent death at the high age of 95 offers the opportunity to reflect upon his legacy beyond sainthood. Amongst others, Matabane interviews the Dalai Lama, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Peter Hain, Albie Sachs and Ariel Dorfman. Critique may just as well be pronounced as approval and veneration. How do they interpret his message of freedom, forgiveness and reconciliation in the world of today?

Nelson Mandela is viewed as one of the greatest political icons of the 20th century. His message of freedom, forgiveness and reconciliation has inspired people across the globe. In 1994, he was elected as the first democratic president of South Africa. Also after his death at the great age of 95 years, his message of reconciliation will remain while being reinterpreted in different parts of the planet.
The film wants to avoid the danger of a single story. The idea is not to find one indisputable truth but to tell Mandela’s story including the rough edges that defined this important man and his thoughts.
The personal take of the South African author and director Khalo Matabane plays a key role in this concept. How was he personally influenced by Mandela? Do others feel the same way? Khalo Matabane choses two different approaches. On one hand he will write a personal letter to Mandela guiding through the film. On the other hand he will interview important personalities such as the Dalai Lama, Joachim Gauck, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Peter Hain, Albie Sachs or Ariel Dorfmanor (and many more) to find out their perception of Mandela’s philosophy and life’s work. Critique may just as well be pronounced as approval and veneration.
This global project includes diverse settings, varying from the key locations of Mandela’s life up to Johannesburg’s slums and the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Nelson Mandela: the myth & me (Book)
Who was Nelson Mandela? Hiding behind the worldwide adoration is a life full of very different phases and a complex personality. Unraveling it demands not only one, but a lot of different perspectives. The book features interviews of nearly 30 significant characters - international politicians, artists, activists, companions and apartheid victims - that either knew him or were influenced by him. By also adressing critical views and testing Mandelas message of reconciliation and forgiveness for its present importance a diverse portrait of one of the greatest humans of our day was created. A must read for everyone believing in the possibility of a more peaceful and just world, on a political as well as on a human level. Contributions by: Dalai Lama, Henry Kissinger, Joachim Gauck, Ko Un, Juliette Binoche, Elia Suleiman, Tariq Ali, John Carlin, Colin Powell, Albie Sachs, Peter Hain, Ariel Dorfman, Nadine Gordimer. et al. The book completes and enlarges the interviews of the film. German by Andreas Simon dos Santos and Nicolai von Schweder-Schreiner HardcoverPlus (incl. "With an impressive lineup of establishment figures ranging from Colin Powell and Henry Kissinger to the president of Germany. Using their voices to explore the nature of Mandela's diplomacy, Matabane both shows reverence for the erstwhile president's influence on other world leaders while demystifying his presumed greatness."
