Since its founding in 2000, gebrueder beetz filmproduktion has already produced more than 230 high-quality documentaries, series, and feature-length documentaries for the national and international market. According to the industry guide “Realscreen” – it is one of the 100 most important independent production companies worldwide.

We are passionate about committed films and thrilling storytelling – the variety of topics ranges from gripping crime documentaries, touching biographies, spectacular nature and adventure series to contemporary music and cultural productions. Each year, we produce 12 to 15 selected films as well as docu-series that are specially developed and produced to suit their market and target audience.

One example is our 2017 BERLINALE entry, Dream Boat, which was produced specifically for the LGBTQI+ community. It was selected by Gay Star News” as one of the 10 best LGBTQI+ films of the year – currently, the film is available on Netflix, just like our six-part political series Nisman – Death of a Prosecutor

In 2020, we produced the first Netflix Original Series on the German market: A Perfect Crime. The four-part doc-series highlights the dark side of the German reunification and analyzes the murder of politician Detlev Rohwedder in 1991, which is still an unsolved crime up until today. It was awarded Best Documentary Series 2020 at the Berlin Series Festival and was nominated for the Grimme Award.

The follow-up project is the first GMPF funded high-end doc-series Reeperbahn – Special Police Unit 65, which will be shown on ARD in Germany in 2022.

Additionally, we are co-producing international productions, often as a European partner in US productions, such as Open Heart by Kief Davidson, which was nominated for the 2013 Academy Award, The Yes Men Are Revolting directed by Laura Nix, or TEENAGE by Matt Wolf based on the book by Jon Savage, supported by Cinereach Productions among others.

Our productions regularly screen in the competition of major international A-festivals and have received numerous prestigious awards such as the Grimme Award five times so far, furthermore the Cinema for Peace Award, Prix Europa, German Film Award, HotDocs Filmmakers Award, British Independent Award or the Special Jury Award of the IDFA.

In 2018, we presented our investigative doc-thriller The CleanersOn the dark side of social media in competition at Sundance International Film Festival, additionally, the film was nominated for the International Emmy® Awards and won the Grimme Award as well as the Prix Europa for Best European Documentary. The film was produced in cooperation with more than 20 international partners.

The documentary about the World Economic Forum, The Forum, was the opening film of the international documentary film festival Leipzig and received the German Economy Film Award in 2020 after its international premiere at the IDFA as well as its pan-European broadcast including Brazil.

In 2021, our production The Hunt for Gaddafi’s Billions! won the Rockie Award at the US BANFF and was nominated for the EMMYS. VIRAL DREAMS received the Japan Prize and the award for Best Documentary Series 2021 at the Berlin Series Festival in the same year.

We also regularly produce content for the German market. Our sex education format MAKE LOVE (16 episodes) achieved an increase in ratings of up to 400%. The format topped the hit list of ZDF Mediathek in 2015 – ahead of the news.

The associated web special www.make-love.de was nominated for the Grimme Online Award and achieved a user record for the public broadcaster with over 2 million hits at times and around 60,000 unique visits per day.

To further develop the classic narrative structures in cinema and TV, we complement our productions with innovative cross-media formats consisting of web docs, apps, social media campaigns, educational games, exhibitions, media events, and books. Here, standards for the documentary market were set above all by the award-winning project Farewell, Comrades! Interactive, which was licensed in seven countries as a European reference project in cross-media storytelling. The transmedia TV live event Supernerds was considered trendsetting in the international industry and received extraordinary media coverage. At the 2016 South by Southwest Festival, the production was nominated for the Interactive Innovation Award. Likewise, we develop and produce interactive VR installations – such as the VR series The Master’s Vision with the installation The Monk by the Sea for the German National Gallery in Berlin or the VR experience for the anniversary of the music band Die fantastischen Vier – Fantaventura, which was awarded Bronzener Nagel (Bronze Nail).

Since 2012, gebrueder beetz filmproduktion has also been developing and producing cinema and TV fiction for the national and international market, such as the multiple award-winning event film Saving the Titanic or the TV series Trio – The Kepler Diamonds, which was awarded the “Emil 2015” for good children’s TV.
